U.S. Representative and CA Senate candidate Barbara Lee is currently a distant fourth in the race to fill the seat left vacant by CA Senator Dianne Feinstein who passed away last year. Lee had hoped to run as an incumbent after Newsom promised to temporarily fill the vacant seat with a Black woman. However, much to the chagrin of Lee and her supporters, Newsom appointed a different Black woman, Laphonza Butler, who expressed no interest in running to fill the seat for a full term.

Black women continue to be underrepresented in the Democratic Party, and the party leadership continues to use cynical and dirty politics to avoid supporting viable Black women candidates, even those eminently qualified like Barbara Lee.
